Wales Nacional Anthem

Wales Nacional Anthem

Hen Wlad fy Nhadau
(Land of my Fathers)

(The Unofficial Welsh National Anthem*)

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion enwogion o fri
Ei gwrol ryfelwr, gwlad garwyr tra mad
Tros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.

Gwlad Gwlad,
Pleidiol wyf i’m gwlad,
Tra môr yn fur i’r bur hoff bau
O bydded i’r hen iaith barhau

The land of my Fathers is dear to me
A land of poets and minstrels, famed men.
Her brave warriors, patriots much blessed,
It was for freedom that they lost their blood.

Wales! Wales!,
I am devoted to my country.
So long as the sea is a wall to this fair beautiful land,
May the ancient language remain.

Flag History

The Wales flag was granted official status in 1959, but the red dragon itself
has been associated with Wales for centuries. The origin of the red dragon is
a myth. One possible theory is that the Romans brought the emblem to what is
now Wales during their occupation of Britain in the form of the Draco standards
born by the Roman cavalry. The green and white stripes of the flag were additions
by the House of Tudor. Green and white are also the colors of the leek, another
national emblem of Wales.
